The Alpha-male handshake

Ever been in a situation where you are walking with a lady-friend and you come to group of her friends and you end up not being introduced? She says hi to everybody, starts talking and five minutes passes and she completely forgot to introduce you? Meanwhile, people glance at you. Everyone feels awkward. Doesn't it make you feel like an extra in a movie?

Well you don't have to put up with rudeness anymore. A little trick that I use whenever these situations occur is the “Alpha Male Hand Shake”. Basically, as soon as you come to a clique of people, wait for your friend to start saying hi to people. If she or he doesn't introduce you, introduce yourself.

This will help you achieve a few things:

1) Show people in the group that you are not a background person; that you are just as important, or maybe more, than the people in the group. Given that they don't know anything about you, they may assume you are someone so important that you usually do not go by unnoticed.

2) Show the other guys in the group that you are more outgoing and less shy than they are, since you reached out to greet them before they did. This will help establish you as an alpha male; the other males in the group will treat you with respect.

3) Show the girls in the group that you are independent, that you don't need to be babied around.

4) Get a chance to learn the girl's names. Repeat the names of the ones you like three times in your head. If you get a chance, and if the situation allows, greet the ones you don't like first, then kiss the hand of the one you like last. You will win brownie points.

Side note: Chalk Trick

Another handshake trick for people with sweaty palms is the “chalk” trick. It applies mostly to job interviews but can be just as helpful in black tie events such as weddings. Simply get some Billiards chalk or black board chalk, in bar form, not powder, and put it in a small bag. Place this bag in you tuxedo pocket. Before being introduced to some one important, stuff your hand in the bag. The chalk will dry up your hand. You can then shake away without offering that “sweaty hand-shake”. This trick works best at job interviews, but can be useful at formal parties, where the women are so beautiful that not only your hands get wet. This way, you can greet them without changing anyone's first impression of you.
